Back Tuck & Back Layout (BTBL) Certification

What is the BTBL Certification course?

The BTBL Certification is a new 8-hour, in-person training focused on back tuck and back layout skills. It provides progressions, drills, and extensive practice time for spotting these advanced techniques.

What are the prerequisites for the BTBL Certification?

Prerequisites for BTBL Certification include:

  • Module Two Certification with a current and active license (may be In Training)
  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Completion of the Aerial and Back Handspring Certification Course and the Module Two Teacher's Certification Course
  • Attendance with a Level 8 or higher dancer demonstrator and who has mastered the progressions leading up to back tuck and back layout. For example, side aerial, roundoff back handspring, cartwheel back handspring step out, hold a handstand for 1 minute, 25 handstand shoulder shrugs, 15 consecutive V-snaps, and 10 push-ups.

How do I complete the BTBL Certification?

To complete the BTBL certification, you must:

  • Attend the course
  • Pass a practical exam
  • Complete 25-100 practical hours (depending on practical exam results)

What examination privileges does passing the BTBL Certification allow me?

Teachers having taken the Back Tuck and Back Layout Certification Course can register dancers for exams in any level, expanding your studio's offerings and student progression.

Please note: Certified teachers in good standing who have successfully completed the M2 training as of January 1, 2025 will have the exam requirements grandfathered allowing them to enter dancers in any level of examination.

What happens if I don't pass the BTBL practical exam?

If you don't pass the practical exam, you'll be considered "In Training" and you will need to retake the course/practical exam until you pass.

Once you have passed the exam, you will receive your practical requirements. Once your practical requirements are complete full Certification will be granted.

Can I take the BTBL course before completing my ABHS certification?

No, you must be certified in ABHS and have attended Module 2 (may be "In Training") before taking the BTBL course. If you haven't passed the ABHS practical exam by the end of Module 2, you won't be eligible for BTBL Certification.
